Talent at McQueens

We’re very fortunate here at McQueens to be bursting at the seams with dedicated and inspiring creatives. As regular readers of the blog will attest, we love sharing glimpses of behind-the-scenes action as well as sharing the stories of our talented team members. This month we chat to three members of the McQueens family to find more about their career highlights and what it’s like to be part of the gang. Acclaimed photographer Liam Duke has captured the outstanding skills and wonderful personalities of our subjects through a series of signature portraits.

Sophie Powell – McQueens Flower School Principal

Sophie, how long have you been part of the McQueens family?

I can’t believe it, but it’s been five years.

Tell us about your most memorable project so far…

Creating the giant pastel gypsophila cloud with the recent vocational course students was a special moment –  it was fun and experimental! The result was other-worldly and we even had shimmering crystal raindrops. I’m very lucky to have had many memorable projects; another highlight was the recent trip to Mexico City where we took McQueens Flower School on tour. Students came from all over South America to study with us – a truly unforgettable experience.

What’s your favourite thing about being a part of the team?

I love being able to include seasonality within the course projects – that’s very important to me. It really is a privilege to be able to work with beautiful materials and express myself creatively every day. Tutoring within the school is very much a two-way learning experience, and I’m always inspired by our course students.

Sophie  – Senior Contracts Florist

How long have you been part of the McQueens family?

Only a year, which has zoomed by!

Tell us about your most memorable project so far?

It has to be a very opulent wedding we worked on at Claridge’s. It was a huge installation where we filled the venue’s ceiling with hundreds of delphiniums. The job began in the middle of the night and looked incredible when finished.

What’s your favourite thing about being a part of the team?

It was my ambition to work at McQueens for years, and particularly part of the contracts team. I aspired to work on large-scale displays in amazing venues across London, so it’s a dream come true. I have to say, my colleagues are great, too!

Alison – Senior Events Florist

How long have you been part of the McQueens family?

I’ve been here for 18 months.

Tell us about your most memorable project so far?

The  most memorable is absolutely one of the biggest jobs I’ve worked on so far – a grand Barmitzvah. This included installing over 10 very large floral chandeliers; many people were involved and the result was unforgettable.

What’s your favourite thing about being a part of the team?

There’s a huge variety of exciting events to work on, so no two days are the same at McQueens. It also helps that we have a fabulous team!
