An Adventure in Mexico

McQueens Flower School was founded twenty years ago with much ambition and fanfare, largely thanks to the demand and interest in flower design. Our school has always attracted students from all over the world but as its reached increasingly global audiences through online platforms, we’ve had the pleasure of taking McQueens Flower School on tour. Previous trips have included Austrailia, China and the US, but most recently we’ve been sharing our floral passion with students in Mexico…

Sophie in action, Mexico-style!

Earlier this year we were very proud to announce a special collaborative class in Mexico City with Festival Flores Y Jardines –  which took place between 24 – 28 September. Inspired by The Chelsea Flower Show right here in London,  the FYJA festival was the first of its kind in Mexico, held at the Botanical Garden of Bosque de Chapultepec. You can read the original blog post here to find out all about the incredible not-for-profit company behind the event.

A passion for flowers

Representing McQueens and leading the classes were two of our fantastic tutors, Sophie Powell and Andrea Bassoli. With nearly 30 years’ floristry experience between them, our expert team couldn’t wait to get started on their Mexican adventure. Students travelled from across South America to attend the four-day course, where they embraced the McQueens signature floral style through a range of bespoke classes.

Step-by-step demonstrations

“We received such a warm welcome from our hosts and students,” Sophie explained of her trip highlights. “The outdoor setting was spectacular, and I loved using local flowers, from scabiosa to hydrangea. Visiting the huge flower market was another memorable experience – I was amazed at the size of flowers. They were out of this world!” Andrea added, “I loved the enthusiasm of the students – there was a great energy in every class,  not to mention the amazing hospitality shown to us by our wonderful hosts.”

Festival organiser, Carmen Gil, praised the collaboration. “We at FYJA were so happy to receive people from other parts of Mexico as well as students from all over South America –  Brazil, Peru and Chile –  which was just awesome. There were even tears on the last day when we had to say goodbye! Everything just flowed so well and of course Andrea and Sophie were amazing.” Carmen’s colleague, Patricia agreed; “Sophie and Andrea’s passion was contagious…we were all very happy!”
