Flower of the Hour: Vanda Orchid

Today we are extolling the exotic delights of the vanda orchid. Resplendent and highly prized, orchids enjoy a special status within the wonderful world of flowers. A category all of their own, these exotic blooms are adored and admired around the world, and have been throughout history. The Victorians became obsessed with orchids and there were many dangerous expeditions documented by collectors searching remote areas of the world, desperate to find new and unusual varieties. The fascination continues to this day and orchid plants remain a popular fixture in homes throughout the world. Cymbidium and phalaenopsis orchid are the most popular orchids cultivated as a cut flower, but the vanda orchid is also a variety that we holds a special place in our hearts here at McQueens! Just saying…

Orchids are packaged carefully for the journey from grower to wholesaler and then on to florists so that they reach their destination in perfect condition. Vanda orchid will usually be boxed to protect the delicate flowers not only form knocks but also from extremes of heat and cold. Vanda orchid tends to be quite short, and each stem of orchid will be priced depending on the number of orchid heads on that stem. The individual orchid heads have very short stems, which can restrict the usage but we sometimes use mini water bottles with an extended stem to enable us to use the individual flower head in designs such as hand-tied bouquets and focal displays. Orchids don’t drink a huge amount and will last with just a small amount of water.

Vanda orchid is widely recognised in the more commonly available purple and pink varieties, but we love some of the more unusual incarnations of gold, cream and burgundy shades. What vanda orchid might lack in size they make up for in longevity – a vase of vandas can last up to three weeks in some cases, making them a popular choice for inclusion in hotel and corporate design work.
