We are extremely proud and excited to announce a very special collaborative class in Mexico City this autumn with Festival Flores Y Jardines, running from 24 – 28 September 2018.
Inspired by The Chelsea Flower Show here in London, the FYJA festival was the first of its kind in Mexico, held at the Botanical Garden of Bosque de Chapultepec. This disused garden was regenerated by the community to provide a connection with nature and a place of contemplation and rest. The festival has been a huge success and it’s one of our favourite projects of its type.
Behind the initiative is Plantando con Causa (Planting With Cause), a non-profit making Mexican organisation formed by a group of gardening enthusiasts who really care about the environment and the problems facing our planet. They share the common belief that anyone involved in gardening is helping to make the world a much better place – and we’d second that!
McQueens Flower School is delighted to announce that our tutors Sophie Powell and Andrea Bassoli will be teaching the week-long course on what will be a wonderful highlight of our schools 20th anniversary year.
Andrea has been a florist for more than 20 years after beginning his career in Bologna, Italy, working for his family’s florist. A senior member of the team, he has worked at McQueens for more than seven years.
“I love the energy and passion in the school,” Andrea explains. “It is always an honour to share our knowledge with students who are just beginning their journey through the world of flowers. I cannot wait to start working on this exciting project in Mexico, getting to know our Mexican students and sharing with them the style and philosophy of McQueens.”
Sophie has been a florist for more than seven years. Initially trained to be an art teacher, she now works full-time at McQueens Flower School, leading courses for students from all over the world. Sophie has extensive experience in all areas of contemporary floral design and loves to share this knowledge and her passion for flowers.
“Mexico has a fascinating culture and history,”says Sophie, “and as a country, it has a very strong appreciation of flowers. I cannot wait to travel there as a McQueens ambassador. We have some fabulous classes planned and I know the students are going to love learning all about McQueens and our unique style.”
