We’ve been celebrating Christmas in classic McQueens style with a festive ‘Made by McQueens’ series, showing our talented florists as they whip up some fabulous, Yuletide-inspired designs. Part four features McQueens florist Selina Kerley who incorporated her love for metallic foliage into a rather gorgeous festive centrepiece.
“I love metallic foliage and can’t get enough of the gold, silver and copper-dipped varieties during the festive season (I wish they were as abundant all year round!). So, I thought it would be fun to make a festive centrepiece with some gorgeous pink roses, festive pine, deep burgundy foliage and, of course, golden eucalyptus.
I found the vintage pot hidden away among the vast collection of vases, pots and containers here at McQueens and knew it would be perfect for this design. It’s a great size for a centrepiece design and low enough to still have a conversation across the dining table if needed. Plus I just love anything vintage with a bit of history behind it— it’s definitely the kind of thing I’d pick up at a flea market myself.
I started off by crisscrossing pinus strobus into the shallow bowl. This made a ‘grid’ to then place the other materials in to. The skimmia japonica came next, followed by red leucothoe foliage, the roses, some more pine, lots of natural pine cones and of course, gold foliage to finish it off. It’s a simple, striking centrepiece that’s quick and easy to make and perfect for a Christmas sideboard or festive dining table.”
