Claridge’s: Into the Forest for Christmas

Over in Mayfair, there’s a little slice of Christmas magic on view for all to see this year at Claridge’s. While we’ve been busy decorating the exterior and other beautiful spots inside the hotel, Apple design guru Sir Jony Ive and world-famous designer Marc Newson have created something rather special for the iconic London landmark hotel. Usually, at this time of year, the Claridge’s foyer is home to a breathtaking Christmas tree – famous names from the world of fashion including Dolce and Gabana, Christopher Bailey and even (we blush to admit it) our own Kally Ellis have installed some fabulous Christmas trees in the foyer in previous years. But for 2016, there’s a break with tradition as  Sir Jonny and Marc (with a little help from British set designer Michael Howells) have created not just a tree but a whole snow-covered forest instead!

Drawing their inspiration from nature, Sir Jony, Marc and Michael used the latest technology to create a magical experience that draws on traditions of the past, while highlighting the hopefulness and promise of the future. The installation features four-metre high light boxes that glow with black and white photographic images of snow covered silver birch trees, set on a pure white floor. Against this backdrop, rise cast models of Scots pine, layered with both natural and photographed silver birch and fir trees, reaching to a canopy of natural green pine. Head further into the hotel and you’ll find a mini forest (with trees sourced by McQueens) to complement the wildly atmospheric frosty snowscape in the foyer, plus plenty of other gorgeous little Yuletide touches by McQueens to complete the Claridge’s Christmas tableau. Now, pour yourself a sherry and pass the mince pies…
