Made by McQueens: A Festive Wreath With Rodney

We’ve been celebrating Christmas in true McQueens style with a festive ‘Made by McQueens‘ series, showing our talented florists as they whip up some fabulous, Yuletide-inspired designs. First up in the running was senior contracts florist Rodney Johnson who opted for a very on-trend natural-meets-metallic festive wreath.

‘I chose to make a wreath because I quite like the technical aspect of it,’ explains Rodney. ‘As a contracts florist, I don’t often get to make technical designs — most of what I do is larger, more constructional. I think the Christmas wreath was originally used to symbolize Christ but the circular shape, with no beginning or end, has sort of evolved to represent eternity or life everlasting. I find that concept really appealing.

I wanted to create something that would bridge the gap between autumn and winter, hence the rustic autumnal tones that complement gold which is so iconically Christmas. The wreath is made up of gold-dipped peppercorns, pines, eucalyptus and rosehips bound on to a central, moss base. It’s exciting to make a fresh foliage wreath — back home (in Australia) it would last three days in the heat! Here in the UK, however, a preserved foliage wreath such as this will see you right through to the New Year.’

Rodney is wearing the fabulous new McQueens apron, made from platinum grey Irish linen and created in collaboration with apron artisans, Enrich & Endure. The UK-made apron, which features an extra large pocket perfect for storing scissors and string (and even a handy separate pocket for smartphones), is available in-store and over the phone.
