All Wrapped Up: The McQueens 2017 Claridge’s Christmas Installation

Christmas at Claridge’s is truly a sight to behold and it’s been our pleasure and privilege to transform the magnificent entrance, lobby and public areas throughout our time working with Claridge’s, including the 2012 installation of the iconic Christmas tree in the foyer  designed by our very own founder and MD, Kally Ellis.

Over the years, we’ve created an array of show-stopping festive decor, from traditional spruce Christmas trees and 12-foot tall nutcrackers to prancing silver reindeer, festive ‘peararia’ (that’s pear-shaped terrariums!) and more. Naturally, this season was no exception, and all hands were on deck to create a concept like no other, as Kally Ellis explains:

“We worked on a number of ideas and presented a few different options for Christmas this year. We often like to pick a simple theme that we can elaborate on and use throughout, and we decided that a gift is an iconic symbol for Christmas that would work beautifully at Claridge’s; the spirit of the season is all about giving and this hotel gives so many guests pleasure throughout the year. We really enjoyed exploring that idea and making the gilt gift boxes on the canopy of the front of the hotel larger than life.”

With the help of local events and logistics gurus, Pollen Crew, the positively ginormous hand-made presents were transported all the way from a workshop in Norfolk and installed overnight, along with four noble firs, three festive swags, two glitter bows, one giant wreath and lashings of fairy lights (of course).

No mean feat: before the overnight  installation, the giant gifts were loaded up in Norfolk before we whisked them down to Mayfair

We think they look rather fabulous, don’t you?

Inside, the eagerly anticipated Claridge’s Christmas tree — with past designers including Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson, Dolce & Gabbana, John Galliano, Christopher Bailey and more — was created by non-other than fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld. His amazing inverted tree creates a truly stunning focal point in the Claridge’s art deco lobby; its silver gilded roots topped with a multi-faceted mirrored star creating a heart-stopping sensational sight to behold.
