If we ever we needed a reminder that love is all you need, it was this weekend. And on Saturday 3 June, there was plenty of love in the air as McQueens staff turned out en force to witness the wedding of our very own school administrator, Freddie, to his civil partner, Tony. It was a glorious day of celebration that stretched on into the evening with feasting and fun, music and merriment, and enough love to bring big beaming smiles to all our faces.
Weddings are joyous occasions but there can be no more jolly occasion for a florist that to be involved in creating the flowers for a much-loved colleague. So it was with much delight and anticipation that we made plans for the wedding flowers 18 months before the wedding date. Anyone who has worked with Freddie will testify to his high standards – only the best will do for our Freddie! – so much there was toing and froing with samples and flower lists to make sure that everything was just right on their big day.
The wedding ceremony and celebrations were held at the plush Savile Club in Mayfair. Established in 1886 by a group of distinguished writers and artists of the time, it was the perfect elegant Mayfair location, packed full of impressive period details.
‘We were very excited to plan for Freddie’s wedding,’ explains McQueens florist Poppy Frost. ‘Although I was familiar with the venue it was great to go for a site visit with Freddie to discuss the flowers. It’s such a beautiful venue so we kept the dressing with flowers very opulent but simple. The staircase is a remarkable feature so we enjoyed complementing it with masses of delphinium, hydrangea, guelder rose and earl grey roses. The fireplaces and mantle pieces featured coordinating flowers and candlelight, but for me the highlight of the day was the most amazing wedding breakfast on tables set with elegant candelabras and masses of flowers – and then there was the most amazing dessert buffet! It was teeming with delicious treats, all set off by our beautiful flowers!’
‘It was such an amazing day,’ says McQueens sales manager Costa Popadopoulos who was also Freddie’s best man. ‘It was a stunning experience that Freddie and Tony meticulously organised for the enjoyment of their guests. The food was delicious and the dancing went on into the wee small hours. Yes, this was one wedding that we will always remember!’
