Join McQueens in Italy in August!

McQueens events team has been fortunate enough to work in Italy most summers for the past five years, creating flowers for lush and luxurious weddings in some stunning locations. From picturesque Tuscan hilltop villages to the olive groves of Umbria, McQueens seems to have a natural affinity for Italy, so as  McQueens Flower School goes international, it was naturally our first choice of location. We tested the waters last year with a sell-out celebratory class for McQueens 25th anniversary, and have just returned from our first Italian class this year.  For those of you who missed it and are hoping to join us on our second trip this August, here’s a little glimpse of what you have to look forward to!

McQueens Masterclass in Italy - A great space with lots of light
McQueens Masterclass in Italy – A great space with lots of light

McQueens founder and MD Kally Ellis was on hand to welcome the students and introduce the three-day class. ‘I have always adored Italy,’ explains Kally, ‘ the country has such a wonderful history and I spent much of my childhood holidays there. Our classes in Italy have taken us by surprise. We’ve had lots of students from all over the world book and they are becoming a highlight of our year. We have another date planned for August and are already planning classes for 2018!’

Lots of space to relax at the Palazzo
Lots of space to relax at the Palazzo

McQueens head tutor Emily takes up the story. ‘When planning the course, our primary consideration is to dazzle our students with gorgeous flowers, but the event is much more than that. Experiencing the region is a must, as are the locally produced food and wine. For us, it’s a great chance to learn more about our students. We’ve had a diverse group of flower admirers including the blogger and writer, Rona Wheeldon from Flowerona. Our class space is on the top floor of a palazzo so it is bathed with wonderful sunlight and gives gorgeous views of the surrounding area. The classes are aimed at beginners and those with some experience of working with flowers, and our aim for the class was to introduce the students to different techniques and styles.’

The class room is dressed for banquet on the final night of the course.
The finale. Flowers everywhere!

Day one began with a fun, summery hand-tied bouquet of yellow roses, camomile, lisianthus, crespidia, achillea and incorporated mint, sage and pistachio foliage to create a really stunning, yet playful and slightly rustic bouquet. When placed in a vintage sweetie jar, on the bedside tables in the Palazzo, it looked perfectly placed. We moved quickly on to focal designs, which sat beautifully in the Palazzos grand entrance hall, the niches on the staircase and beside the grand well (with lion-headed lever).

Every night we created gorgeous tablescapes;  vases of flowers complete with candlesticks, tea lights, even candelabra and a gorgeous hanging installation of terracotta coloured calla lilies, which we then got to enjoy over our delicious dinner! Our project for the final day featured an elaborate table runner of flowers, which cascaded onto the floor either side of the table. The room was finished with suspended flowers and was the perfect backdrop for our farewell dinner!’
