We completed our last course for 2016 in September and it has been a tremendous year for McQueens Flower School. We settled into our state-of-the-art new school space in Bethnal Green this year and welcomed record numbers of international students. We have shared our skills and knowledge with teaching assignments abroad to China, Italy, and Dubai, and our four-week vocational course now runs central to the curriculum at McQueens Flower School and makes the perfect starting point for anyone planning to take their passion for flowers to the next level.
‘We have a real commercial focus on the vocational course,’ explains Emily Mathison, McQ head tutor. ‘We start from the very basic aspects of contemporary design and examine event, corporate and wedding design in great detail. The course ends with large-scale installations such as flower arch, hanging installations, and creating a flower wall. The course is very hard work, that’s true, but it’s also extremely rewarding. It’s a real joy to see the progress of the students who have been immersed in flowers for four continuous weeks.’
We spoke to a some of our students from our September class to find out about their time at McQueens Flower School.
‘The whole experience was spectacular! I have learned much more than I expected and my eyes have been blessed with so many beautiful flower creations. I would like floristry to be a big part of my life and make my own special place in the flower industry. I would like to thank the tutors so much for dedicating their time, and being very helpful and genuine.’
‘I appreciated the variety of skills learned. The weeks progressed in well-thought through sections, from small scale to large installations. The pace was fast which meant I made satisfying progress each day. I loved the immediate result of the teaching. Being able to quickly apply the techniques I learned into something of my own to keep was brilliant. The thoughtful selection of colours and textures of materials made it easier to create a beautiful end product. Emily, Guiseppe and Diana’s personalities and professionalism are invaluable to McQueens.’

‘I enjoyed the classes so much at McQueens. Every day was so different and full of excitement. It was both challenging and fun, I love the classes and plan to go back home to Taipei and running my own shop.’
‘My experience at McQueens was fantastic. I enjoyed it much more than I could have expected! I’d like to work in a flower shop to gain as much experience as I can, and then after that I’d like to become a freelance florist. You couldn’t choose better teachers – they are amazing!’
