New Dates: McQueens Flower School: Italy 2017

We always knew that to celebrate our 25th anniversary in style, we’d want to do something really special. So when our accounts director Riccardo Micolucci suggested a master-class to be held at his recently restored 300-year old Italian palazzo, it was a resounding ‘YES!’ from the rest of Team McQueens. Of course, it did mean a small reconnaissance trip to check that Palazzo Tartagliozzi met all our very exacting requirements and to confirm that the amenities, the food and the locally-produced wine would meet with the expectations of a very discerning McQueens delegate. It’s a tough gig, but someone has to do it…

So back in May, we pitched up at the palazzo and discovered to our delight that it ticked all the boxes. Oozing charm and character by the bucketload with a gorgeous open-air terrace beside its own pool, we knew instantly that this would be the place. Nestled in a sleepy village in the hills of Abruzzo, the location was just perfect. The rolling countryside was such a delight, and the majestic views in this green heartland of Italy made our hearts flutter just that little bit faster.

The delicious food passed with flying colours, too. Numerous local specialties were sampled, all expertly cooked by Riccardo and Daniela, the Palazzo housekeeper. They both grew up in the area and make a formidable team: knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and extraordinarily accomplished in the kitchen. Although the region is noted as a wine-producing area of distinction, it was still felt necessary to conduct rigorous testing into the wee small hours (purely for research purposes, naturally), such was our selfless regard and dedication to the enjoyment of future guests.

Back at home, we unleashed a marketing campaign to promote the 25th Anniversary Master-Class – a blog post, a handful of tweets and a couple of mentions on Instagram. Lo and behold, the course was quickly sold out  with delegates subscribing from all over the world; Taiwan, Korea, Dubai, Hong Kong, UK and (oddly enough) Italy!

‘When we planned the class way back in April, we had no idea how popular it would turn out to be,’ explains Duncan McCabe McQueens social media manager and school director, one of the tutors on the class. ‘I knew the space would be perfect when we were considering the event, and it was an inspiring location for a full house of warm and wonderful people.’

In true McQueens Flower School tradition, the two-day workshop had a packed agenda: a combination of demonstrations, individual students projects and installations created by the group. The palazzo has lots of interesting nooks and crannies to explore and decorate, with alcoves and archways providing the perfect backdrops for dressing with flowers. Delegates also enjoyed a wine-tasting workshop, and a mouthwatering pasta-making class that proved popular with everyone.

‘A weekend of flowers was so much fun for me,’ continues McQueens tutor Giuseppe Puddori. ‘There was lots of laughter in addition to the flowers! The students made the experience so special, the group connected from the very first moment, and they were such a privilege to teach. We had a diverse class of characters, from beginners to the very experienced. There was a real spirit of camaraderie among the group, with lots of help and support for everyone.’

‘We’ve had the most amazing comments from our new friends on this very special master-class,’ adds Riccardo. ‘I think it will prove to be one of the highlights on the McQueens Flower School calendar from now on. Duncan and Giuseppe taught the class in such a friendly and informative way, with great humour – everyone felt so relaxed, and they all said they learned so much in a single weekend. My favourite part  was the final day project, the transformation of the main hallway at Palazzo Tartagliozzi into a grand entrance festooned with flowers and candlelight to welcome us all. It’s been such an incredible experience and one that we’re sure to repeat in the future.’

Stop Press!! New Dates for Italy 2017

We had such a good time in Italy and so many wonderful comments from our students that we have two separate sessions planned for 2017.
